Innovation with Lights

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

So I came across a could different postings on creative lighting that I thought I would share with everyone. I’ve been on this interior design kick trying to make my living space more me, but these articles are always interesting anyway. I hope you are inspired and just enjoy the images J

The Fiat Lux Lamp by Constance Guisset and Grégory Cid

This lamp uses magnetism and a floating orb “switch” to fill your room with light.

Next is one of my favorites the Sticky Lamp. The lamps have adhesive back which stick to any surface. Use them for just lighting up your space or interesting wall art. You can purchase for $47 at gSelect.

Last is the Oyule lamp series. Sergio Silva (an industrial designer) takes us in a time warp using oil to provide light in very modern day light bulbs.

Picture First, Style Later

I read this tutorial on VECTORTUTS today about How to Create a Three Color Wolf Skull in Illustrator (the link to it is below). More and more I have been coming to the realization that some of the best artwork is not always out of thin air. So many people use reference points, pictures, models, etc to make their base like they want it. Then when you have the base drawings you can ad your own personal style to how the final product is presented. So many great grunge illustrations I have seen all started with a picture, that the artist then took to the next level and made it their own.

CHALLENGE: Take a picture of anything you see in the outside world; could be a tree, a person, or an animal, etc. Load that picture onto your computer and see what type of illustration you come up with after “tracing” the base.

Email me what you come up with I would love to see!

Oh by the way here is the link to that tutorial:

Light Table Construction

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

So i have decided to try to build a light table for the new office at my apartment. I used one pretty often in college for photography and some logo sketching, but i really want to get back to basics and start more drawing and sketching things out; almost having a final design on paper before I even look at my computer.

I may have to solicit some help from a friend, because as most people who know me understand, me and power tools do not get along.

I just want to create a small light table; nothing that I’m going to use as a desk or anything like that because i have a separate desk for all that. But i was thinking about getting one of the bigger shadow boxes and using that for the basic structure of the light table and going from there. I’m not very architecturally handy, but i know how to plan things enough to get the right people to help me with the technical aspects of building the final product. I want it to be hot pink and orange too!

I found this website that I might try to take some ideas from to build the table:

Under $30 Light Table

Can’t go wrong with building a table that costs under $30!!! Where’s my tool belt…let’s get this started!
