Order Out of Kinetic Chaos

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

In the most basic sense kinetic typography is an art, technique and expression thru animated text. It is order and chaos all in one! It’s been around for a while, but you see it more and more all over the place, films, commercials, viral videos, etc. The art of really mastering kinetic typography comes with the understanding of how each word relates to the word that follows and how it expresses the vision as a whole. It also is how the animation of one specific word conveys it’s individual meaning: does the word jump really jump, does the word angry convey that emotion, and so on and so forth. You’ll see this kind of type used a lot on TBS commercials and the images that pop up in the corner of the screen to promote an upcoming TV show or movie. Here are a couple kinetically typographic videos I found and enjoyed. You can also check my last post You STILL Can Do ANYTHING! for another really great video. ENJOY! Also if you have any I should check out let me know!

Web Master Quest

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

So I’m on the road to becoming the web master that I want to be. I am taking it one step at a time, learning the basics and getting those down pat and then when I think of an idea that I want to try I make sure I figure it out using the elements I am trying to learn. And it’s not a matter of just looking up random code on the internet and copying and pasting it. I really want to understand HOW it works. So if I need to recreate it in any situation I can do that easily. I want to be the most versatile designer that I can be. Not just someone that “makes things look pretty”. I want to be the one behind everything, that without me the whole site in general just would not work. It’s a great feeling to accomplish something like that.

I have mastered manipulating HTML and CSS, and also making sure the code is accepted in Safari, Firefox, and even the painful task of making sure it is Internet Explorer compliant. I have gotten in the habit of not even using the WYSIWYG interface and just working purely in code. (I never thought I would get to that point, but it’s so cool to know exactly where to go in the code to fix the problems). But that’s my update for now….now i’m starting to break down AJAX and PHP and see if I can figure those out as well :)

Updates soon!

Web Skills Here I Come!

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Today I decided that I am going to focus on my Web skills. Printed design is my specialty and I learn new things with that everyday by just doing more and more projects; and although I should have done this long ago I’m going to be focusing more and more on my web work, extending to more than just designing the look of the sites. There are so many things out there, new and existing, that I want to learn about. For the next week I’m going to be focusing on refining my HTML and CSS skills. I have been talking to a lot of web developers lately, and although I do plan on working with a developer for some sites I will be building, I want to understand both ends of things. It’s always beneficial to understand the task you are going to be tackling as a whole, so if something goes wrong you’re not a deer in headlights; completely blind sided.

I’ve always been an analytical mind; math and code have come easy to me, but now it’s definitely time for me to refine it and really KNOW it hands down. If anyone has any suggestions on resources: books, blogs, people they can get me in contact with in the area of web development, I would greatly appreciate it. Maybe when all is said and done I’ll go back and finish up my computer science degree, if I start to like it that much!
